作者的兒子Eddie突然過世，他回想和兒子相處的快樂時光，描述兒子死後埋藏在強顏歡笑的日常生活之下，這種難以言喻的悲哀。
圖畫書中的圖片更加強這些意念，看著看著，悲傷像是一大罐顏料倒進清水中，先是染了一小片顏色，然後全散開，變成一缸子顏色水，就這麼著，渾身都悽涼起來。
以前不是那麼懂「不可承受之輕」這句話的意思。現在好像懂了一點──對他人來說是很輕的悲傷，但是對自己而言，這種輕，是永遠存在而難以承受的。

This last bit means that I
don’t want to be here.
I just want to disappear.
